Couldn’t agree more! We’ve hated these snag-you-into-installing-our-toolbar since back in the day & have yet to find one that truly serves a purpose without allowing a bunch of b.s. in. Nice digg.

If you dont want people to bitch about your “Free but install sneaky shit” programs, don’t release it for free and then install sneaky shit. Just charge people for it. if its good enough, people will pay for it.

    Deception IS idiotic

Well, everybody needs to get some money out of his work but I guess it can be done in a non-intrusive way. Users that don’t read/understand impact of that kind of installation finally got slow machines with tons of toolbars..
All the freeware I distribute on my web site have no features like that and … it never get one dollar out of it … That’s a choice …

It’s much like co-operative advertisement.. be sure to de-select the co-op junk when you install.. slow down on the click click click!

That has GOT to be one of the most annoying bloody things around, installing toolbars for this, toolbars for that, and sometimes sneaking ine crap in where you don’t really see it until it’s too late, and you have the viral crap on your machine.
Same thing with the yahoo toolbar.

I place these things in the same spot as malware,…

developers, if you do that ^^^ I luv you!

why, because you’re giving us FREE software and also gives us the choice to install ONLY IF WE WANT that crap toolbar so you can get a coffee or something and keep doing awesome free software. otherwise we would have to pay real $$$ for your software

AGREED. I missed the second checkbox one time and accidentally installed it…stupid program hijacked my browser randomly. When I uninstalled it, it continued hijacking my browser. I did a suggested fix I found on a site somewhere and now my browser gets hijacked by Google randomly. I’m about to uninstall and reinstall Firefox entirely, all because of this friggin’ stupid toolbar.

@Herman: I’ve always wondered what the “deal” was, too. I hope it’s worth it…

@Ask.com: Why even allow this type of shit? NOBODY ACTUALLY WANTS YOUR TOOLBAR!! It’s installed by mistake or “user error” 99.76% of the time. (Again, must be the $$$…)

Don’t blame the developer. They work for a living just like us. Blame the company that hires the developers to install this stuff. They are the ones thgat call a meeting and brow beat the developer untill s/he packages up their hard work and turns it into malware. Most developers hate this just like you do.

Blame the user who clicks next nextnextnextwhatevernextnextfinish like a chimp wanting the banana.
The developper is usually just doing what the client wants…

Those pesky things don’t do anything good to anyone’s computer system. If you’re a developer and you choose to embed such a thing in your installer, i hate you. If you’re a developer and you choose to actually install such soft(mal)ware, then i don’t want to call you a developer.

Despite the income, it’s not a wise choice to either embed nor install such additional “sponsored” software. 9 out of 10 times it’s just plain malware.

You have the right to be unsatisfied.. but probably, who made that code don’t have any fault.

I’m a developer – but I have experienced the financial frustration that leads to someone doing something like that.

The sad truth of it is that most people simply refuse to pay for most software. They expect it to be free. They even get pissy about ads. Take a website; it has costs associated with it. The domain name, the hosting, the development time and the content. You put up a few ads to recoup your loss and what happens….people bitch, complain, and use tools to block your ad.

If you hit a certain level of critical mass – then sure – you can be profitable. But most people don’t, for a lot of reasons.

And this is just ‘the norm’ these days.

I know people who use TVersity all the time. They’ve got a media center PC running 24/7, downloading crap and the PS3 is setup to stream from the PC. TVersity is one of the best options out there. I’m talking late 20’s, well to do guys – one is a lawyer, one is an investment banker. They’ve been using it for over a year.

How much did they pay for it?
    $0

    Why? Well, because, it’s “free”.

Personally, I wrote a fish-bot for WoW, back before there were a million of them out there. And, I’m not going to lie – it worked really, really well. I tried to sell it for $5 dollars and had zero buyers. I made it ‘free’ with a ‘please donate’ button on it and I’ve had several hundred downloads. The app phones home when you start it up; I can see people, the same IP addresses, using my application for hours over the span of months. They aren’t ‘testing it out’ to see if it works – they are using it *all* the *freaking* time.

    But they don’t donate.

So, eh, I can understand where the guy is coming from. TVersity is a great product and countless people out there using it, without paying anything, to fund it. The annoying installer is annoying; but I’m sure it puts some dollars in his pocket.

And, let’s be honest, since it’s a free download – 99% of the population isn’t going to pay for it, even if it’s worth money. It’s not like his pissing off loyal customers; he’s pissing off freeloaders. If they don’t like it and uninstall his app – he doesn’t care.

I’m creating Toolbars as a full job developper, and I love it! And yes, it’s very lucrative!

Sorry but I don’t hate you my dear dear toolbar user!

  32. What an idiot

    22. Apr, 2010

What a f***ing crybaby. You mean to tell me it is too hard to uncheck the check box. If you installed it, you don’t have any body to blame but you moronic self.

    23. Apr, 2010

In every industry, you pay for a product or a service but when we look at software or internet services, there are thousands of free products and services… and people are expecting more and more products or services become free… I am not agree with that. People should pay like in other industries for softwares and services…And if someone find a way to make money like toolbars (it is already optional), we can not blame him/her. It is rudeness to the developer to blame for such method…

  34. Antony

    23. Apr, 2010

Yes this is highly irritating. Pushing your product in my face when I’m trying to do something else only serves to make me hate you and your product. Why do this?

On the bright side, I don’t have to deal with crap like this anymore since switching to mac.

  35. ToddHofer

    27. Apr, 2010

I’m drawn to both sides on this. I understand the developer needs at least something to make writing programs a lucrative investment for he/she. It IS unfair that people will freeload and not donate 1 penny to someone who has invested 100’s of hours into an app that a person will use forever. On the other hand, the developer should not trick people into installing it. The install option should be unchecked by default. Let the user actually decide is they wish to install it. Actual honesty on the developers side may get more people to install it just because they know the can trust the developer rather than feel they were scammed or tricked.

The wording is bad, but you are only agreeing to the license for the toolbar. I’ve seen these a lot in installers, but they have to offer a way out if it’s a legit installer.

    Agreed that it’s annoying, however.

I wouldn’t exactly call asking the user to install a toolbar “sneaky.”

It’s not even that hard to spot… there are checkboxes, read the descriptions and uncheck them. These types of things keep software free and support development. I’m all for them.
